tropical banana leaves colourful and semi abstracted

The practical details

  • I work with acrylic on handcrafted ply panels. The panels are made from 3mm ply attached to a cradle. The cradle is a frame which sits under the perimeter of the ply to keep it rigid.

I apply three coats of gesso to a piece before I start painting. Gesso is a white polymer paint. Its purpose is to seal a panel and provide a non-porous work surface for the paint.

I prefer a ply panel as they are robust. I use a range of tools other than brushes in my practice, and ply handles the way I build surface texture and layers

Each piece is sealed with 3 coats of gloss medium. This protects the painting but also reveals and enhances the layers of colour and marks in the piece.

I then wax the piece with a soft cloth, which results in a satin finish.

The piece can be hung flush to the wall without a frame.

I can work on canvas on request. This is a beneficial option if you live outside of Australia or would like to commission an “ epic” sized work.

  • Once you have decided to commission a piece. I will send you a brief survey so we can start the conversation which is the key to a successful commission.

I’ll ask about size, the room you see this piece in, subject, colours, what you like and don’t.

I’ll produce a concept drawing and a few small sample pieces so you can see how the piece will work. Seeing something real is always better than words. Art is a visual medium, so I provide visuals.

Lead time is flexible, but I would aim for a month from payment.

Delivery will depend on your location. If you are near Brisbane we can arrange collection or delivery to your address. If further afield, courier or post.

The piece will be well wrapped for shipping and handled with the utmost care.

  • I have customised art forever.

I once painted a dog driving a speedboat. I made a pink Lambretta in papier mache. I have painted portraits and personalised pieces for babies to 90-year-olds.

When you commission a piece ,I want you to have a connection, so if you would like a special flower, object, or even some discreet text added, then let’s talk. I am open to ideas, and if you dream it, I can probably paint it.
