As part of my 2023–2024 residency at The Acres, I kept a weekly sketchbook for many months, mostly drawing flowers in ink with crayon to capture their colours. This rich archive of observational work became the foundation for a series of studio paintings.
In the early years of my career, I painted en plein air in Bermuda, often spending time in the parish banana patches creating small gouache paintings on paper.
When I saw the towering bananas at The Acres, I knew instantly I wanted to draw and paint them. This time, I worked on a much larger scale, letting their lush, tropical forms fill the canvas. The experience felt like a homecoming — a return to the subject and sensations that shaped my early artistic journey.
