Another Time, A Distant Place
As part of my 2023–2024 residency at The Acres, I kept a weekly sketchbook practice for many months. Most of these studies were flowers drawn in ink, with crayon marks to capture their colours — an ever-growing resource of observational material that later informed my studio paintings.
The towering banana plants at The Acres instantly transported me back to my early career in Bermuda, where I painted en plein air in the parish banana patches. Back then, I worked small-scale, in gouache on paper. This time, I wanted to capture the bananas on a grand scale, letting their lush, tropical presence fill the composition. The process felt like stepping into a memory — another time, a distant place — while rooted firmly in the here and now.
